What is the relationship between Atman and Brahman?
In Advaita Vedanta, Atman names the true Self and Brahman names ultimate reality. The teaching is that they are not two separate realities. This does not mean that a person's changing thoughts, preferences or personality govern the universe.
The Ramakrishna Vedanta tradition presents this understanding as something to investigate through scripture, reasoning and contemplative practice. Listening to the teaching, reflecting on doubts and assimilating its meaning are complementary parts of that inquiry.
This is an Advaita account. Other Vedanta traditions understand the relationship between the individual and God differently. Keeping that distinction visible helps us study a particular teaching without treating every Hindu philosophy as interchangeable.
